New Tips And Ideas for Spring Gardening

Spring is a special time of the year for everyone, especially for gardeners. If gardening is your passion, you probably wait the entire year for this magical season. There’s nothing more beautiful than witnessing new growth on trees and witnessing the magical process of your budding flowers blooming.

With spring right around the corner, it’s time to kneel in the mud and get your hands into the soil to plant everything you have wanted to plant since winter. If you’re looking to spruce up your gardening game this spring and are aiming to create a garden more beautiful than ever, we have a few ideas to help you get started.

Here are some new ideas for spring gardening.

Make Your Own Compost

If you’ve been gardening for a while, and haven’t made your own compost, then what are you waiting for? This is the time to make “black gold” from all the kitchen and yard waste that you throw out. Add discarded coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels, and other yard waste such as grass trimmings to the compost pile instead of tossing them into the trash.

Even though it may seem like a tedious job, but compost piles are very easy to make – all you need is some extra yard space to help you get started. Not only will a compost pile help save you money, but once you start making it yourself – there’s no going back!

Divide Your Perennials

In most areas, the soil has probably warmed up enough to be worked. This is the ideal time to divide perennials in your garden that have overgrown their space. It’s important to divide their space before the beginning of their growth cycle. Dividing your perennials and other flowers yields more plants and keeps them healthy.

Grow Salads

If you don’t have the room to dig up for a garden in your yard, there are many simple ways to plan greens in pots. All you need is a window box or a small pot that will yield plenty of baby greens for a delicious salad.

You can grow not one but three greens in the same container, including mesclun (a mix of lettuces), arugula, and spinach. Sprinkle some seeds in a pot, cover it lightly with ¼” soil, and keep it moist. You will be able to reap the seeds in the form of fresh baby greens within a month’s time!

Grow Veggies Indoor

Salads are quite easy to grow since they require minimal effort. However, growing other veggies is a little more ambitious. If you have space in your garden, there’s no better time than spring to start planting your own veggies, such as peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants. Having your own sustainable garden with your own compost pile will make it even easier to grow vegetables at home.

You can start growing plants from seeds with some veggies, placing them on your window sill, and then transplanting them into your garden later on. If you’re a beginner, remember to start light and then eventually move on to plant more.

Create Your Own Rain Barrels

If it rains quite a bit in your locality, your garden could benefit from collecting rainwater. Building a rain barrel to collect rainwater from the roof not only saves money but also reduces runoff from your property to the sewer system. This prevents harmful substances such as oil, and pesticides, and fertilizers from contaminating the local rivers and streams.

The easiest rain barrel DIY is to simply place a barrel or large tub under the downspout of your home. You need to ensure that it is properly covered to keep it from being a drowning risk for children and pets. Many people also creatively attach a hose to the barrel to fill watering cans easily.

Upcycle Unused Clutter into Planters

Gardening is all about sustainability, and creative gardening is about coming up with the most inventive ideas to make use of as many things as you can to grow beautiful plants. This spring, let your creativity flow –use unused clutter, such as old garden boots, glass jars, baskets, or even canned goods, to make some great planters. Look around in your garage and cabinets for items that can hold soil. After that, all you’ll have to do is drill some drain holes and then use them to plant early spring flower seeds such as violas.

Create a DIY Garden Trellis

Amp up your garden this spring with a garden trellis. You can construct this from materials that are simply lying around in your garden, such as long branches. Lash a few long branches together on one end to form a ladder or tepee form, and secure them with zip ties. You can train plenty of plants up the trellis, such as pole beans, morning glories, and cucumbers.

DIY a Potting Bench

Create your own potting bench this season! If you have an old table, dresser, and nightstand lying around, you can convert it into a potting bench. Drag the table outside to your yard, dress it up with some paint, or use it as it is. Arrange flowerpots on top of the bench – just the way you like it!

Spring Raised Beds Garden

Trying raised bed gardening this spring can lead to an abundant harvest. Raised garden beds have many benefits: you won’t have to worry about weeds or matching the soil to your plant’s needs, and most of all, you will be able to grow a lot more food in much less space. Another huge advantage of raised beds is that you can plan warm-season vegetables in early spring since the soil warms up much faster in comparison to in-ground beds.

These new ideas for spring gardening can help you create a space-maximizing and creative garden while allowing you to grow a few plants indoors as well!
